How to Use an Essential Oil Diffuser: Drops, Water, Run Time
The drop count printed in your diffuser's own manual beats any chart on the internet, and where a manual gives none, a defensible starting point is 3 to 5 drops per 100 mL of water, run 30 to 60 minutes on and 30 to 60 minutes off. The published numbers disagree with each other by a factor of two or more, so the useful skill is knowing where each number comes from and which one applies to your device.

Here are the figures from the three documents we opened for this page. They are not interchangeable, and the differences are the point.
| Source | What it says | Per 100 mL |
|---|---|---|
| Tisserand Institute, essential oil applications page | A rule of thumb of 3-5 drops per 100 mL of water, to be adjusted. Its support staff add that oil type, diffuser output, room size and airflow all matter, and that the diffuser's own instructions may give an amount. | 3-5 |
| Kmart Australia ceramic ultrasonic diffuser manual, model B-0353-1, undated | 2-3 drops for a full tank of 100 mL, for a stronger scent more but "do not exceed 4 drops." The same manual also says not to add more than 2 drops of oil to 20 mL of water. | 2-4 (the 20 mL line scales to 10, so the manual contradicts itself) |
| Primavera Life "Petit" personal diffuser manual, June 2025 | A tank of no more than 8 mL of water with 1-2 drops of oil, running 30 seconds on and 90 seconds off. | 12-25 (but a small personal unit with a different mist cycle) |
Two things follow. First, a drop is not a fixed unit: the Tisserand Institute's review of three drop-size studies reports that the number of drops in a milliliter varied from about 20 to 40, so four drops could be 0.1 mL or 0.2 mL depending on the bottle and the oil (Tisserand Institute, "How big is a drop?"). Second, the manual that contradicts itself is a reminder that printed numbers can be careless. Reasoning from these three, our advice is to start at the low end of your own manual, add one drop at a time on later runs, and stop when you can just notice the scent from a few steps away. You can add oil to the next run; you cannot take it out of a tank once it is in.
Water type is a real variable
Both manuals say to use room-temperature water, and the Kmart manual sets 45 degrees C as a ceiling. The type of water is a real variable. In a chamber study at the University of Toronto, Schwartz-Narbonne, Du and Siegel (Indoor Air, 2021) ran an ultrasonic diffuser with lemon, lavender, eucalyptus and grapeseed oils and found that filling the eucalyptus unit with tap water instead of deionized water raised fine-particle (PM1) emissions fivefold. The study tested one ultrasonic device and four oils, so it does not give a rule for every unit. It is, though, a documented reason to prefer distilled water in an ultrasonic diffuser, and reasoning from it is the only basis for the advice, since the Primavera manual accepts either distilled or tap water.
Run time: intermittent is the cited norm
Robert Tisserand's guidance on diffusing is to run it intermittently: 30 to 60 minutes on, then 30 to 60 minutes off, and the Tisserand Institute's safety guidelines add that some fresh-air exchange is advisable whenever oils are diffused. Its diffusion page also says very low levels, barely noticeable, are fine for any length of time (Tisserand Institute, diffusion guidelines). The manuals point the same way from the hardware side: the Kmart unit offers 30 minute, 1 hour, 2 hour and 3 hour timers and warns against leaving it on or unattended overnight, and the Primavera manual states that continuous use may damage the product in the long term and shorten its life. The longer the timer, the more reason to open a window or step out of the room. If you feel dizzy, nauseous or lightheaded, or have chest discomfort, the Tisserand Institute's advice is to switch the diffuser off and get fresh air.
Cleaning: your manual may forbid the recipe you copied
Cleaning advice is where manuals disagree most plainly. The Kmart manual says to empty the reservoir, wipe it with a soft cloth, clean scale on the ultrasonic disc with clean water, never scrape the disc with metal or abrasives, and "DO NOT use vinegar or other corrosive cleaning agents." It also says to clean the reservoir before switching to a different oil. The Primavera manual takes a different route for its much smaller unit: fill the tank with 6 mL of water and 2 mL of 70% rubbing alcohol, run it, and clean the nozzle with an alcohol-soaked cotton swab. A blog recipe that calls for vinegar would break the first manual's instruction, and a vinegar-free rule would be wrong for a unit that allows it. The rule that survives both: unplug before cleaning, use the method your manual names, dry the unit fully, and do not let oil sit in the tank between uses.
What damages a diffuser, and where amyris sits
Manufacturers name three oil-related risks. The Kmart manual says acidic oil can damage the diffuser and tells you to check the oil's instructions; it names no oils, so we cannot say which ones it means. The Primavera manual says not to use viscous or strongly colouring essential oils, and that essential oils may damage or discolor plastics and wood, damage that is "usually irreversible," so spills should be wiped immediately. And the Kmart manual ties too much oil to damage. For our oil the facts we hold are these: the published Certificate of Analysis describes the appearance as a yellow liquid with a relative density of 0.952 at 20 degrees C. We cannot tell you whether a given maker considers that "strongly colouring," so if your manual has that restriction, ask the maker before filling the tank with any oil that is not on its list. We sell one oil and no diffusers, and we have no affiliate arrangement with any diffuser brand, so none of the manuals above is a recommendation.
Common ways a diffuser session goes wrong
- Too much oil, not too little. The Kmart manual's own warning is that too much oil damages the diffuser, and the Tisserand Institute's advice is to start conservatively.
- Running it all night. Both the 30-60 minute guidance and the Kmart manual's "do not leave it unattended overnight" argue against it. See is diffusing essential oils safe for the longer discussion.
- Moving it while it runs. The Kmart manual says spillage can damage the diffuser and tells you to hold both the base and the cover.
- Using it as the whole plan. A diffuser is a fragrance device. The Primavera manual states plainly that its product is not medical equipment.
Who should not diffuse, or should ask first
ANSES, the French health safety agency, reported in 2020 that essential-oil sprays and diffusers were linked to eye, nose and throat irritation and respiratory effects even in normal use, said the evidence was not yet sufficient for firm conclusions, and advised against use by people with respiratory conditions, particularly asthma, and by pregnant or breastfeeding women. Both manuals we read also say diffusers are not for unsupervised children, and the Kmart manual says that care should be taken around animals. Ask a physician, an OB-GYN or midwife, a pediatrician or a veterinarian before diffusing around those groups, and read essential oils and pet safety and oils around children first.
Putting amyris in the tank
Amyris is a base note with a creamy, woody, balsamic scent and a soft vanilla undertone. In a diffuser, reasoning from that, it works best as one or two of your total drops alongside a citrus or floral oil you buy elsewhere, not as the whole tank; our amyris diffuser blends show how to split a small total. If you are choosing hardware first, how the main diffuser types work compares them, and the aromatherapy beginner guide covers the wider habits.
Read the manual, start low, run it in short cycles, use clean water, and let the room air out between sessions. That is most of what the published guidance adds up to.
